Think SPRING garments!

By Serena Nabeta | April 24, 2009

Yes, I admit, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to purchase a couple several pieces of fabric for something I will use for some kind of garment in the future while I was at Denver Fabrics. Even though Colorado still seemed like we were in the middle of winter (we had 8″ of snow the weekend I was there!), here in Kansas, it’s beginning to feel more like Spring! We’ve had 70 and 80 degree days this week and that is getting me in the mood to add some spring and summer skirts to my closet.

I spotted this beautiful aqua blue fabric and just loved the color! Joanna was actually surprised that I considered getting that fabric since it was a knit eyelash. Actually it looks crocheted. And usually that is not the style of clothing I wear; it’s a little bit shaggy looking. But I really loved the color! I can see a simple 3/4 length sleeve sweater top from it.

Then I started looking for another piece of fabric to match it and came up with nothing. Absolutely nothing. Then Joanna held up this very big, bold print (see it on the left??) and said I should make a skirt with it to match the knit. I took one look and came up with a quick and definite NO. The large yellow, orange and green floral is not my usual style of clothing, even if it did match.

But then I took a second glance (See, that’s where I get into trouble – the second glance.). Well, it does match the aqua blue knit. And I’m sure I don’t have anything else to match that color at home. Maybe it will be ok. Maybe if I do a short skirt, so I’m using a minimal amount of THAT fabric. Well, not too short, just shorter than a long skirt. (Sorry, Joanna – I just burst out laughing! No one else will understand the reason behind that comment! ;))

Ok, so I was convinced. Well, sorta. Kinda. Not really. I haven’t decided yet. I did buy both pieces of fabric and will make up both and then decided whether I still like that print. Maybe once I get it made into a simple a-line short skirt, it will be fine. And look wonderful with the eyelash knit. Makes me want to stop typing right now and start stitching. :)

Moving onto what else I found to add to my stash…..

Black pink pinstripe – It’s black; what else can I say? I wear lots of black and there’s just so much that you can do with black. And the pink pinstripe makes it different than anything I already have.

Black sparkle sheer – This fabric is just elegant! We tried putting burgundy and pink underneath it and it looks wonderful. So maybe I’ll stitch a little jacket or something.

Gray plaid – This actually has a touch of blue in it and I really like the plaid. Joanna found this first and when she decided she didn’t need it, I snatched it up.

Brown embroidered suede – Isn’t it neat?!?! The feel is so luxurious! It will make a nice skirt for this fall/winter.

So now I just need to get started sewing! First the bathroom curtains and then the skirt and sweater top. Or maybe it should be the other way around. Yep, that sound better to me. ;)
